The Black Paintings (2023)

The paintings were produced at the National Art School and installed in my studio during the 2023 academic year.

I undertook research into Susan Hiller (USA/UK) and have employed her methodology of a minimalist aesthetic with surrealist sensibilities. For this project, I created a process to create a series of paintings and presented them in a rational grid format. The concept required that I follow the same process and use the same materials for each work. I researched the Surrealist technique of decalcomania and my influences came from Ithell Colquhoun (UK), who dispensed with figuaration and created a set of 78 paintings called Taro of Colour.

The end result was presented in an objective grid arrangement of 3x3.
